The incident began for a rebel group of Myanmar named Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO). This group attacked on a military patrol team that killed 4 Myanmar army personnel. As a result, Myanmar became very furious and increased the number of troops with heavy weapons .

But,They didn’t accept that they were unable to counter insurgency and that’s why they were being attacked again and again by rebel groups. Myanmar accused Bangladesh for this incident. They complained that RSO used Bangladeshi territory in that attack what means Bangladesh was involved. But Bangladesh refused that and BGB & Bangladesh Army conduct a joint operation. Bangladesh Army and BGB jointly drove away some rebels who were hiding in Bangladeshi hill areas in a few days in order to help Myanmar.

But RSO wasn’t the main the problem. After some days,on 29th May in 2014 ,Border Guard Police of Myanmar attacked a BGB ( Border Guard Bangladesh ) patrol team and abducted a BGB nayek named Mizan. After that both of the countries got tempered and increased the number of troops in border areas. Later it came to know that BGB personnel Mizan had been brutally killed by Border Guard Police of Myanmar. Bangladesh played diplomatic game and finally Myanmar agreed to handover Mizan’s dead body through a flag meeting .

Why Myanmar became so furious ?

As local people said ,in May 2014, BGB became very strict against drug smugglers and planned to establish 5 new border post in this area. These activities had lessen the income of BGP ( it’s open secret in Cox’s Bazar area that BGP is directly involved with drug business ) and even BGB Nayek Mizan were abducted while raiding a smuggler group. It’s assumed that BGP was there in order to protect the team nothing else. So there was tension between BGB and BGP from 13th May 2014. Perhaps that’s why BGP became furious .

Whatever,BGP and BGB both agreed for a flag meeting. BGB wanted to have the flag meeting near to 50 no. piller whereas BGP wanted to have the flag meeting near 52 no. piller. Though 52 no. piller was very inaccessible but BGB accepted BGP’s demand. The BGB team sent to bring Mizan’s body back was led by Brigadier General Syed Ahmed Ali who was the regional commander of BGB’s Chittagong region. There were senior officers like Colonel Farid Hasan,Lt. Colonel Shafik and others in that team.

When the BGB team reached 52 no. piller, suddenly BGP and Myanmar Army jointly began to fire at BGB team. That was an obvious deception but BGB was prepared then. BGB also opened fire at BGP and Myanmar Army in response. Both parties used weapons like heavy machine guns, rocket launchers and mortars. The conflict continued for 5 hours.

According to various sources, one mortar shell of BGB killed 6 Myanmar Army personnels and two of them were officers. But local businessmans say that they had seen 12-13 dead bodies of Myanmarese personnels there. There  was no casualty from BGB as they were alert enough .Every time casualties are shown less as we have seen in border conflicts of 2001 & 2005.

After that incident tension between Bangladesh and Myanmar reached its peak . Myanmar Army deployed artillery brigade and many army troops in the border area. Bangladesh also increased the number of BGB troops in the border area in response and some military troops were deployed too. Both of the parties were in an alert position for many days. Myanmar returned BGB Nayek Mizan’s dead body and he was buried with proper national honours. With time the tension decreased and the situation became normal like before again.

N.B :- After some months of the incident, Bangladesh Govt. decided to wipe out every news regarding that conflict in order to maintain peace . Leading newspapers removed their contents and even it’s denied now that BGB opened fire. However, there some proofs still now.
